What is periodontal disease?

Most people suffer gum inflammation from time to time. Around 10% of the population appear to suffer more severe forms that cause teeth to become loose, and this group is at greatest risk of losing teeth. It is caused by the bacteria that collect on the teeth.

Why do some people suffer and not others?

Some people are more susceptible, and our knowledge is improving all the time. Three major risk factors are thought to be responsible:

  • Family history
  • Stress
  • Smoking

Stopping smoking is an important part of reducing the risk. Certain general conditions, such as diabetes, autoimmune disorders (rheumatoid arthritis) and hormonal changes (menopause), may also increase susceptibility.

How do I know if I have it?

Signs vary but may include gums that bleed when brushing, bad breath, a bad taste, waking with blood on your pillow, teeth that drift apart, and receding gums. Many people have the disease without knowing it, which is why regular assessments and screening, sometimes with X-rays, are essential.

What should I do?

Regular examinations will ensure a correct diagnosis, and your dentist will advise on any treatment needed. Diagnosed early, most cases of periodontal disease can be successfully treated.

I've met many patients who have avoided visiting a dentist and allowed severe gum disease to develop. Modern dentures are good, but I'd always recommend you keep your teeth for as long as possible. The sooner you diagnose a problem, the easier, quicker and less expensive the treatment. If you think you may have gum disease, contact the surgery and we will help you overcome it.
